Funders’ Wellbeing Roundtable

How can environmental funders support the wellbeing of their grantees over these next crucial years?

October 6th, 10am- 12pm GMT

Facilitated by: Jo Musker-Sherwood, former Founder Director of Hope for the Future and eco-activist resilience researcher.

Wellbeing investment is essential in ensuring environmental staff can operate at peak performance.

Very little research currently exists into how wellbeing and resilience are affected by environmental work. When I burned out as the Founder Director of a rapidly growing climate communications charity, I wanted to see whether there were lessons to be learned from my experience that could serve the environmental sector more generally.

My research found that environmental staff face significant challenging emotional impacts of environmental work including; anger and frustration, intrusive thoughts about climate change, eco-anxiety and symptoms of burnout.

Lowered wellbeing is unpleasant to experience, but it also significantly impacts  performance, leading to time off sick, higher staff turnover rates, and difficulties collaborating, for example.

Research shows that organisations can struggle to see their own wellbeing needs, are concerned about reaching out for wellbeing support from funders, or feel guilty about seeking help.

Setting a stronger wellbeing culture across the environmental sector will therefore require leadership from funders who actively encourage organisations to take care of their wellbeing

With guest speakers, discussions sessions, and the opportunity to hear directly from grantees’ about their wellbeing needs, this two hour roundtable will explore opportunities for collaboration on how wellbeing is supported by funders across the environmental sector.

Organisations already involved in this session include the Samworth Foundation, the European Climate Foundation, Quadrature Climate Foundation, and The Environmental Funders Network.
