Who Created the Hub?

Hi, I’m Jo Musker-Sherwood (she/her); culture worker, mother and deeply feeling human.

Coming to environmental work in my early twenties filled my life with meaning, but after time it began to take an unbearable toll. I thought that perhaps it was a ‘me’ problem. That I was too sensitive, needed too much, was too much.

After giving my all to founding a fast growing organisation I truly believed in, I was devastated to realise I wasn’t cut out for it. I was mentally and physically broken, scared for my own financial survival and full of despair about whether it was really possible to make any kind of meaningful change in the world.

What I wish I could have told myself then was that this burnout experience was a kind of dying experience that would ultimately birth a whole new way for me to be in the world.

I see our individual experiences, such as burnout, as an expression of our collective experiences under late stage capitalism. There is a dying to the old way of violently extracting from ourselves and each other that needs to happen in order for us to adapt, survive and thrive.

With that in mind, I have come to believe that some of our most courageous acts of resistance start from within ourselves, rippling out.

Through culture work, workshops, facilitation, 1:1 mentoring, and my online programmes I come alongside changemakers and changemaking organisations around the world who want to find healthy, non-violent and transformational ways of being in the world.

Some of my training includes; nature connection and facilitation with Change in Nature, grief tending with Grief Tending in Community, authentic relating with ART International, coaching with The Coaching Academy, engaged Buddhism with Plum Village, spiritual growth and transformation with the Diocese of Sheffield, and Reiki.

Drawing especially on the wisdom of grief tending practices, nature/ body connection, and radical governance practices, for example, I help people find their most powerful and authentic way of turning up to the work that is there’s to do in the world.

Some of the organisations I’ve worked with…

It’s not always easy to recognise the signs of burnout. It can creep up on us, especially those of us who are serial ‘copers’ and ‘givers’.

Here are some of the top things to look out for…

Are you at risk of burnout?

✋🏼 You’re experiencing joylessness, anxiety or despair, wondering whether a joy-fuelled life is possible and perhaps ifwhat you’re doing is really making a difference.

✋🏼 Your body is talking to you through aches, pains, illness, and exhaustion and you’re worried you might not be able to carry on as you are.

✋🏼 You find yourself hardened to your fellow humans or perhaps struggle to believe we’re truly capable of building a better future.

✋🏼 You’re feeling guilty, tying yourself in knots about your lifestyle choices, trying to balance the way you love to live with your values.

✋🏼 You know you love nature, to connect with others or to get creative, but you’re not getting enough time doing the things you love because self-care feels futile in the face of all that is unfolding in the world.

When we are deep in burnout it can be difficult to believe that life can feel any different. But recovery is possible, and not only that, but burnout can become a catalyst for deep, personal transformation if we know how to navigate the experience.

The Rest of Activism Recovery Hub is here to support you in this transformative process.

FAQs

  • Why do I charge a monthly fee for the Recovery Hub?

As much as I would love to offer my work for free, I am also a self-employed mother and carer. By charging a small monthly fee I am able to keep tending to the Hub, updating the information and adding new resources. You can use it for as little or long as you like, be that one month or several years. This is currently the best way I can think of resourcing myself whilst making the support I offer as accessible as possible.

  • Is burnout recovery really possible when the world is on fire?

The risk of burnout on a planet that is burning, is high. And if we’re not careful, this is where fear-fuelled activism can easily take us. These are important motivators, but over time we may find that operating from this place becomes unsustainable and impacts our ability to turn up in the world in the way we want to. Joy-fuelled activism, on the other hand, enables us to embody sustainability from the inside out.

Joy-fuelled activism puts the very things we are fighting so hard to protect at the heart of everything we do. It reduces our risk of burnout and enables us to live our lives more fully in spite of all that is unravelling in the world with now. And in so doing our message to the world becomes an irresistible invitation to be part of something beautiful. By taking time out to restore our joy, we can mitigate the risks of constantly feeling that we are living in survival mode. In other words, The Rest of Activism is here to discover the art of the long-haul journey amid a crisis that would us sprinting every day.

It is my deep conviction that this leads to more resilient, sustainable and effective activism. We cannot cure the various crises we face with the same individualistic, scarcity mindset that led it. Finding our joy is one of the most powerful acts of resistance we can take as activists.

  • Can I join from outside of the UK?

Absolutely. Whilst some of the advice parts of the Hub are aimed more at UK-based folks, the rest of the Hub is relevant across country divides. I am also working hard to include signposting and resources that apply in other regions of the world also.

  • Can my organisation join the Recovery Hub?

Yes, I offer wellbeing packages specifically for organisations which include organisation-wide access to the Recovery Hub. Please get in touch with me here to find out more.

  • What if I want to join but don’t consider myself an ‘activist’?

I have a very loose understanding of the word activism. It is my understanding that activism is more of a personal identity than something we do. If you care about the world, if you’re hurting because the world is hurting and if you want to see that change— even if you don’t have capacity to do much about that right now— then the Hub is made for you.

  • What if I want to cancel my subscription?

You can cancel your subscription at any time and without giving any notice. Simply go to the members area and cancel— no questions asked.
